What is Bird Beat™ Birder’s iField Notebook™ and what can I do with it?

  • BirdBeat™  is a revolutionary portable field observation tool that lets you quickly & accurately capture key visual info and field data about a bird to make a positive species ID.
  • Just record and save color & pattern markings and other field data on a BirdBeat™ preformatted topography template – then go back to birding!
  • Later, you can match your iField Sketches to your digital or hard copy field guides and share them with friends to help you ID your sightings.

How do I start a new iField Sketch™?

  • From the Home screen, select Start New Bird.
  • Select Bird from preformatted templates – closest match.
  • Select Bill for Round or Crest Headed birds – closest match.
  • Select Tail for Triangular birds – closest match.
  • Now add color, pattern detail, field data and your own notes to the iField Sketch template.

Why is there a lock on the template?

  • iField Sketches open in locked mode.
  • Lock and unlock the template by touching the lock icon.
  • When locked, you can enlarge and reduce (pinch & zoom), and move your template around to more easily focus on specific areas.
  • Unlocked, you can apply color and patterns to your iField Sketch.

How do I make my template larger or smaller and move it around?

  • Lock your iField Sketch.
  • To enlarge or reduce, pinch & zoom in and out.
  • To move your template, touch the screen and push the template in any direction.
  • Unlock the template again to apply color and patterns.

How do I add color to my iField Sketch™?

  • Select Color Palette (toolbar – paint palette).
  • Place finger in center of Cursor (4 black arrows).
  • Drag Cursor to change color.
  • Large square (top right) changes to display the color beneath the Cursor.
  • Slider Bar (bottom) will brighten (slide left) or darken (slide right) color.
  • Select Bucket Tool (top left) to color your iField Sketch.
  • Bucket Tool will fill any shape you touch. (Allow 5 seconds for color to fill in the background.)
  • To change colors, repeat and create new color or choose from saved colors.
  • BirdBeat™ will save the last 12 colors you use with each saved iField Sketch.

How do I make Grey on the Color Palette?

  • Select Color Palette (toolbar – paint palette).
  • Place finger in center of Cursor (4 black arrows).
  • Drag Cursor to bottom and center of Color Palette, just above Slider Bar.
  • Move Cursor left & right along this edge to change shades of Grey.
  • Large square (top right) changes to display the color beneath the Cursor.
  • Slider Bar (bottom) will brighten (slide left) or darken (slide right) color.

How do I make White and Black on the Color Palette?

  • Make Grey. (See FAQ on how to make Grey.)
  • Slider Bar (bottom) will brighten or darken color.
  • Slide all the way left to make White.  Slide all the way right to make Black.
  • Large square (top right) changes to display the color beneath the Cursor.

How do I make Brown on the Color Palette?

  • Select Color Palette (toolbar – paint palette).
  • Place finger in center of Cursor (4 black arrows).
  • Drag Cursor between yellow and warm red (left side Color Palette) until you see a Brown close to what you want in the large square (top right).
  • Slider Bar (bottom) will brighten (slide left) or darken (slide right) color.

How do I add pattern detail to my iField Sketch™?

  • Select Color Palette (toolbar – paint palette).
  • Create your color with Cursor or pick from saved colors.
  • Then choose a thick, medium or fine Paintbrush Tool.
  • Tap an area on your iField Sketch to add Spots.
  • Drag your finger along and area to create Lines.
  • Drag your finger in quick zigzag movements to create Streaks.

What if I make a mistake in coloring or patterning?

  • Undo and Redo Tools (toolbar – curved arrows) give you up to 10 Undos and 10 Redos.
  • Undo and Redo tools work whether your template is locked or unlocked.

What if I don’t have time to finish coloring and detailing my iField Sketch™?

BirdBeat™ provides a Quick Check Checklist to help record memorable characteristics.

  • Select the Quick Check icon (toolbar – paper w/check mark).
  • Check as many of the pattern markings that apply.
  • Touch the back arrow (top left corner).
  • Your Checklist will be saved when you Save your iField Sketch.
  • Later, refer to your checklist to add the markings and color to your saved iField Sketch that you didn’t have time for earlier.

How do I record my Environmental Data?

  • Select Notepad icon (toolbar – spiral pad w/pencil).
  • Select Environmental Data menu bar.
  • Date/Time – The current date and time will be displayed in the window.
    • To accept the current date and time, hit Save.
    • To manually change date and time (at any time), use the scroll wheel. Then hit Save.
  • Location – If your device has onboard GPS, your Location can either be GPS driven or manually input.  If your device does not have onboard GPS, you can enter your own Location by using the keyboard that pops up when you touch the “enter location manually” box.
    • To change a previously saved Location, tap your finger in the text box where your saved location appears and click the circled “X” to delete it.
    • To save the new GPS Location displayed in blue, press Save.
    • To manually enter a different location, type it into the blank text box and press Save.
  • Weather – Choose from 5 Weather conditions by tapping on one of the Weather icons listed.
  • Habitat – Choose from 10 Habitat types by tapping on one of the Habitat icons listed.
  • Save your iField Sketch to save your Environmental Data.
  • You can edit your Environmental Data as many times as you wish.

How do I record my Behavioral Data?

  • Select Notepad icon (toolbar – spiral pad w/pencil).
  • Select Behavioral Data menu bar.
  • Choose from 6 Behavioral categories:
    • Foraging
    • Bathing
    • Posturing/Display
    • Movement
    • Flight Pattern
    • Song/Call
  • Each category lists key characteristic bird behaviors. Check off as many as you wish.
  • Save your iField Sketch to save your Behavioral Data.
  • You can edit your Behavioral Data as many times as you wish

How do I record my own Notes?

  • Select Notepad icon (toolbar – spiral pad w/pencil).
  • Select Notes menu bar.
  • Touch the screen to open keyboard.
  • Enter any Notes you want.
  • Hit Done before exiting this screen (top right corner). Your notes will not be recorded if you do not hit Done before exiting.
  • Save your iField Sketch to save your Notes.
  • You can edit your Notes as many times as you wish.

Can I turn GPS location service on and off?

Absolutely, whenever you like.

  • Go to Settings on your device and select Location Services.
  • Find the BirdBeat™ app on the list shown.
  • Slide the GPS permission bar into the ON or OFF position.

How do I save my iField Sketch™?

You can save your iField Sketch at any point, and as often as you wish.

  • Select Save icon (toolbar – disc).
  • Name iField Sketch (alpha numeric characters, spaces, dashes, underscores and periods only).
  • In this Save screen you can:
    • Name or rename your iField Sketch
    • Save or resave your iField Sketch
    • Preview your iField Sketch with all your Field Data
    • Email your iField Sketch with all your Field Data
    • Upload your iField Sketch to Facebook

How do I preview my iField Sketch™ to see it with the information I’ve entered?

  • You can Preview your iField Sketch, Field Data, Quick Check items and Notes from 2 locations – the Save screen and My iField Notebook.
  • To Preview from Save screen:
    • Select Preview button to open your iField Sketch file.
    • Scroll down to review all the Field Data, Notes and Quick Check items you’ve entered with this iField Sketch.
    • Use the back arrow (top left corner) to return to your iField Sketch template.
  • To Preview from My iField Notebook:
    • Select the My iField Notebook menu bar from Home screen.
    • Touch the circled arrow (to right of thumbnail image) to open your file.
    • Use the back arrow (top left corner) to get back to My iField Notebook.

How do I email my iField Sketch™?

  • From the Save screen, select the Email icon.
  • The email client on your device will launch.
  • Your iField Sketch, Field Data, Quick Check items and Notes will pre-populate into the email.
  • Customize your message as you wish.
  • Hit Send (top right corner).
  • A pop-up window confirms your email has been sent.

How do I upload my iField Sketch™ to Facebook?

  • From the Save screen, select the Facebook icon.
  • You will be asked to sign in to your account the first time, and each time you update or reset the BirdBeat™ app on your device.
  • Your iField Sketch will upload into the photos section of your Facebook page.  (Field Data, Quick Check Items and Notes will not be uploaded.)
  • A pop-up window confirms your iField Sketch has been uploaded.
  • You can then share your iField Sketches on the BirdBeat™ Fan Page or wherever you wish.

How do I return to the Home screen?

  • From your iField Sketch screen, select the Home icon (toolbar – house).
  • From any other screen, continue to hit the back arrow (top left corner) until you get to the Home screen.

What’s in My iField Notebook™?

  • All of your saved iField Sketches are stored here with the Field Data, Quick Check Items and Notes  you’ve saved with them.
  • From here you can access any of your saved iField Sketch files to view in Preview mode or to continue editing them.

How do I make edits to my saved iField Sketch™?

  • From the Home screen, select the My iField Notebook menu bar.
  • Find the iField Sketch you wish to edit.
  • Touch the thumbnail image to open the iField Sketch window.
  • Add or change color, patterns, field data and notes as much as you wish.
  • Save your changes if you wish to keep them.

How do I delete iField Sketches™ from My iField Notebook™?

  • From the Home screen, select the My iField Notebook menu bar.
  • Hit the Edit button (top right)
  • Touch the circled arrow (to left of thumbnail image) of a iField Sketch™ you wish to delete.
  • Touch the red Delete button and your iField Sketch will disappear.
  • This is a permanent deletion.
  • Repeat as desired.
